a participatory project creating folding chairs, on three scales of relationships
“I had three chairs
in my house;
one for solitude,
two for friendship,
three for society.”
-
Henry David Thoreau

solitude:
a chair whose value is defined solely through
the one person: Its about personal reflection,
the value inherent in the relationship with yourself.
creating through meditation,
the time you spend with yourself.

friendship:
for our chair we decided to make
two equal chairs joined together with one bench style seat.
focused on creativity and collaboration,
the resulting pattern is a barely noticeable
tracing of the wood-grain.

community:
framed as an intentional workshop to teach to simple
woodworking skills and active participation in production
each participant chose a part of the chair to make, and began
the hardwork of producing measuring, cutting, drilling, etc.
at our second meeting we came together to assemble each chair.
the nine chairs will have a home in the community at The Welcome Project.
